Food Insecurity in Southern Nevada: A Growing Concern

Instructions

The issue of hunger is escalating across Southern Nevada, with a recent report from Three Square Food Bank revealing an alarming increase in the number of residents facing food insecurity. During a visit to the food bank this June, it was evident that volunteers were tirelessly preparing meals for those in desperate need. According to Sheena Skelton, a registered dietician at Three Square, the community’s heartbreak over these statistics grows stronger each day. The numbers reflect not just a statistical rise but a tangible struggle affecting countless families.

This year's figures show a significant jump in food insecurity, impacting 377,270 residents, which represents an increase of 35,790 individuals compared to previous years. Among those affected are children, prompting collaborative efforts between organizations like Three Square and the Library District. Programs such as Meet Up and Eat Up aim to provide essential meal services during the summer months when school meals are unavailable. Melissa Sanchez, Children’s Department Head at Spring Valley Library, highlighted that they served over 2,300 meals last summer alone, noting an uptick in family participation since schools closed for the season.

Community support extends beyond children, with senior citizens also benefiting from these initiatives. However, the timing and availability of meals differ depending on the library location. While the challenge remains formidable, the commitment to eradicating hunger within the community continues to inspire action. Such programs underscore the importance of collaboration and compassion in addressing critical societal issues, fostering hope for a future where every individual has access to sufficient nourishment.
